Major Events of 1971
During the year of 1971 there were a lot of crime, music and a lot of things occurring.
• Baltimore Colts beat the Dallas Cowboys 16 to 3 on January 17 in Miami, Florida in Super Bowl V.
• An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale rocks Los Angeles just after 6:00 am February 9, killing 51 and injuring 880.
• On February 28, the Weather Underground bomb the U. S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. in March, causing $300,000 worth of damage.
• On April 20 the Supreme Court said it's okay to bus schoolchildren to other schools in order to integrate schools in Charlotte-Mechlenburg Board of Education v. Swann.
• On June 13 the New York Times publishes a series of articles based on a Pentagon study. The Pentagon Papers give details of the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. More on the Pentagon Papers
• 26th Amendment is passed on July 1. This is the first time U.S. citizens can vote at 18 instead of 21.
• Washington's John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts opens September 8 with a performance of Leonard Bernstein's new mass. When complete, the center will seat 6100 in three halls.
• On September 9, inmates at Attica Correctional Facility in Attica, NY stage a riot. They demand better living conditions, training, and education. Governor Nelson Rockefeller orders the State Police and National Guard to retake control of the prison. 43 are killed including 11 hostages. Most are killed by police.
• Disney World opened on October 1 in Orlando, Florida.
• The Electric Company makes it television debut in October.
• The Pittsburgh Pirates win the World Series by defeating the Baltimore Orioles four games to three on October 17.
• Look magazine stops publishing on October 19.
• The American League expansion Washington Senators become the Texas Rangers as Washington looses it baseball team for good.
• Tapestry by the U.S. singer-songwriter Carole King includes her songs It's Too Late and You've Got a Friend. It also includes Poems, Prayers and Promises by John Denver.
• Mariner 9 orbited the Earth.
• Hot pants are popular.
• National Women's Political Caucus was founded to encourage more women to get involved in politics. Its founders were Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Bella Abzug and Shirley Chisholm.
• The film Shaft is released. It was one of the first films to feature a black hero.
• Pierre Verdon invents the food processor.
• Mariner 9 orbits Earth.
• Intel Corporation built the first microprocessor.

Voting age lowered by 26th amendment to 18.
United Nations votes to seat Communist China and expels Nationalist China.
Intel introduces the 4004, the first microprocessor.
Britain adopts decimal currency
Indo-Pakistan war. East Pakistan becomes the separate state of Bangladesh.
First (and last) British launched satellite, "Prospero", launched from Woomera, Australia.
Idi Amin overthrows Ugandan President, Milton Obote.
Supreme Court rules unanimously that busing of students may be ordered to achieve racial desegregation.
Anti-war militants attempt to disrupt government business in Washington. Police and military arrest as many as 12,000, most are later released.
Pentagon Papers published.
